Long term care of silicone breast implants

Patients´ information about the long term care of silicone breast implants

On November 12, 2006, the Food and Drugs Administration lifted the ban of using the silicone breast implants for aesthetic surgical procedure such as breast augmentation.     This lifting of ban is to assure the public that they are safe and effective to use.

The two companies that are manufacturing the silicone breast implants are still continuing to have researches and studies for the long term care guidelines for this type of breast implants.     Although the surgeons and the manufacturers are vouching the safeness and effectiveness of silicone implants, it is still essential for the candidate to discuss things regarding the breast augmentation types to be use for her. silicone breast implants

In case of implants ruptures, the saline breast implants are easy to detect for it leaks out and will be absorbed by the body.    The size of the breast decreases in size so changes are noticeable.    While in silicone breast implants, the leakage is minimal because of its thickness and it cannot move literally compared to saline implants.  If ever the silicone breast implant leaks, even the surgeon could not detect or notice it without using other methods of detection.    No one could notice the changes because the fluids do not leak out.

The silicone leaks cannot be detected by just observation.  With the use of MRI, the surgeon and the patient could learn the abnormalities or problems that occurred in using of the silicone gel-filled breast implants.  The cosmetic surgeon could recommend a qualified radiologist who would do the MRI screening for the patient.  Eventually, the surgeon would recommend some techniques or instructions for the solutions of breast implants leaks.  It is very important for the patient to follow the scheduled visitation of her practitioner.

Food and Drugs Administration are recommending patients to have a MRI screening three years after the implant surgery and upon the instructions of the cosmetic practitioner, every two years.    This is for the plastic surgeon to monitor the stages of the silicone gel breast implants and the health condition of the patient.

In any case the patient involves in a trauma or injury or she notices an abnormality on her breast augmentation, it is necessary for her to see or consult her cosmetic surgeon immediately.  Again, a MRI screening should be done.

As of today, patients who wish to have breast augmentation or breast reconstructuring, preferred silicone gel-filled breast implants than the saline implants.     A good suggestion for the candidates to choose the right breast implants for her is to have a serious discussion with the surgeon, learn the advantages and disadvantages of each type of implants and the surgeon will assist and guide the candidate in terms of long term care of the silicone gel breast implants.

A patient must be aware also the common risks and complications of breast augmentation using the silicone breast implants so that she could learn the long term care of her implants:

  • Anesthesia reaction.  The patient might suffer allergy from anesthesia, so it is better to discuss to the surgeon and anesthesiologist the type of anesthesia that will be given to her
  • Hematoma
  • Seroma
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding
  • Severe pain

You have to be aware of everything before and after having a silicone breast implants for your own safety.
