Which is the best?  Silicone implants or saline breast implants?

The words breast implants pertain to medical devices that are used in increasing the breast size and to restore the tissues of the breast which was lost or damaged due to some factors like disease or injury.   Since the year of 1960´s breast implants have been used in plastic surgery as well as for cosmetic applications.    Females who wish to enhance or improve their one of their physical assets like surgical reconstruction or enlargement of the breasts should be aware about all the information on implant alternatives for deciding on what specific cosmetic surgery she is desired for.

The popular type of breast implants being used since the year 1960 is the saline breast implants.  This type is still being used today in breast surgery.     The external shell of the saline implants is made up of vulcanized silicone elastomer.     When this type of implants is placed in the patient, the case is filled with the sterile saline solution or salt and water.     The saline volume is very important in using this type of implants.   Too much volume of saline will cause rupture and with less saline volume will produce the unnatural folds in the case of the device.     The patient must remember that the construction of the saline implant is similar type of silicone shell that is found in the silicone breast implants.   Saline implant is not free from silicone.

The drawbacks of saline breast implants:

  • Not realistic in look and feel
  • Higher rupture cases
  • Have a limited lifespan
  • Will need a revision surgery  in the future
  • Might require multiple replacements

The two advantages of using silicone breast implant are; there are the decrease in numbers in rippling cases and can promote the natural breast feeling.    For these two main factors, they are the popularly chosen by women who wants to feel and look in natural way.    And one of the drawbacks is this type is expensive compared to saline breast implant.

Silicone breast implants were approved only last 17 November 2006 after they were banned in the United States.     Thin women with moderate size can use this type and can place the breast tissue over the muscle without compromising the breast´s size and shape.
